Advocating for inclusive governance – The centre for citizens with disabilities(CCD)

Overview

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities is a non-profit organization that promotes the rights of citizens with disabilities through education and sensitization to create the opportunity for full and inclusive participation in society for equal opportunities and social justice. As such, CCD was founded in 2002 with the express mission to achieve inclusive governance, equal opportunities, and social justice for persons with disabilities.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of CCD is to:

Raise awareness on the rights of persons with disabilities and inclusive governance.

Encourage persons with disabilities to participate in politics and decision-making.

Operate towards a policy change to make laws.

_Programmes and Initiatives_

CCD implements various programmes, including:

• _Disability Rights Advocacy_: Promoting policy reforms and legislations

• _Inclusive Education_: Accessible education to children with disabilities

• _Economic Empowerment_: Entrepreneurship training and access to microfinance

• _Accessible Infrastructure_: Inclusive infrastructure development

_Success Stories_

Some of the remarkable successes include:

• _Passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018_

• _Establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities_

Increased participation of persons with disabilities in politics and governance

Beneficiaries

Some of the beneficiaries of the programs undertaken by CCD include:

Hon. Obinna Omerie: a wheelchair user who got elected into the Nigerian House of Representatives

Rahmatu Hassan: visually impaired entrepreneur trained and funded in business

Ibrahim Abdullahi: hearing-impaired trained by CCD and became an advocate of disability rights
