There are now two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party-the GDI, alias “NEW”, supportive of Wike, and the “Simplified Group” led by Fubara. As the tenure of the caretaker committees in the 23 local governments draws to a close, while elections are said to be scheduled for October 2024, political watchers must have their eyes on unfolding events. The question is: who will finally control the political structure of Rivers State?Insiders in the GDI camp confirmed that Wike’s loyalists are optimistic about retaining the party grassroots structure. “We have the experience, the resources, and the manpower to ensure our dominance,” said a GDI insider. The Simplified Group, comprising Fubara’s supporters, nevertheless stands undeterred and is equally determined to outshine their opponents. “We have the incumbent governor’s backing, and we’re poised to take control of the party’s structure,” claimed a source from the Simplified Group. All these have, however, made the APC, Labour Party, and other political parties in the state interested in the internal struggle of the PDP, as this will make them leverages for the now-widening divisions in the bid to make incursions into the state.Dr. Sofiri Peterside, a political analyst, stated that the struggle for control within the party was a factor that would shape and influence the very future of Rivers politics. “The struggle for the PDP structure in the state is the make-or-break moment of that party. Whoever emerges victor will dictate the pace of political events in Rivers State for years to come.”With the local government election scheduled for October 2024, everything is in place for an interesting battle between the GDI and the Simplified Group. It’s just a matter of time until there is a winner of this soul-contest in Rivers State.
