Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities: The Disabled Self-Reliance Centre – DSRC

The Disabled Self-Reliance Centre is a non-profit organization committed to the promotion of rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Nigeria. The centre was established in 1995 to advance the lives of people with disabilities toward being self-reliant and independent.

Mission and Objectives

DSRC strives to ensure that:

– There is equal opportunity for persons with disabilities

Inclusive education, employment, and health

Right activation of persons with disability and policy changes

Type of Assistance

DSRC provides its assistance in a host of ways including but not limited to:

Education and Training: Scholarship, Vocational Training, and Skill Development Programs

Economic Empowerment: Microfinance, Entrepreneurial Support, and Employment Placement

Healthcare: Medical Aid, Rehabilitation, and Accessibility Support

Advocacy: Right Activation of Disabled Persons, Policy Changes, and Creating Awareness

Success Stories

Some of the beneficiaries of the DSRC programs who have carved a niche for themselves are:

Rahmatu Tijjani: A blind entrepreneur who received business training and funding from DSRC; she is now a successful fashion design business owner.

Emmanuel Onyekwere: A wheelchair user who got an education scholarship from DSRC to study law at the University of Lagos.

Aisha Abubakar: A deaf artist who received DSRC’s vocational training in art and is now showcasing her artwork internationally.

Origin

DSRC was founded by a group of persons with disabilities and their allies, consisting of:

– Lateef Oladimeji: A disability rights advocate and the founder of DSRC

– Dr. Adebayo Olowu: A rehabilitation specialist and the pioneer Executive Director of DSRC

DSRC collaborates with:

– World Health Organization (WHO)

– Nigerian Government
