As the tenure of the caretaker committees in the 23 local government councils of Rivers State gradually draws to a close, the state is increasingly getting plunged into fervent political activities. Persons living with one form of disability or another in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area, aka ONELGA, have urged Honorable Prince Isaac Umejuru, presently serving as Commissioner for Physical and Urban Development, to throw his hat into the council chairmanship contest ahead of that election. The representatives of the six political zones, in a well-attended press conference led by Barrister Amuda Chigozie and assisted by Mr. Clinton Agi, showered encomiums on Honorable Umejuru for his exemplary leadership qualities, vision, and commitment to inclusive development. They stated that they had purchased an intention form for Hon. Umejuru single-handedly from their pockets, a sign of seriousness and selfless interest in his candidature and to further demonstrate the fact that they had long wished him to be their patron, much before his appointment as Commissioner.Which he immediately accepted then.Chief Ochi Oha Izidor Jacob Ikeagwu, a respected chief of the community, hailed Umejuru’s commitment to the welfare of ONELGA people. “Prince Isaac has shown unwavering commitment to our community’s growth and development. He is the right leader to take our local government to the next level.”He was followed by Mr. Clinton Agi: “Prince Isaac has made remarkable achievements in infrastructural development. His track record is great in physical and urban development; he has the ability to transform the infrastructure of ONELGA and give opportunities to our people.”Other representatives from the zones took turns explaining the good qualities of Prince Isaac, underlining his inclusiveness, integrity, and passion for development-a case they made quite strongly for his candidature.”We believe that Honorable Umejuru has the capacity to bring about positive change and ensure that our voices are heard,” said Barrister Chigozie. “We urge him to join the race and salvage our local government from stagnation.”The purchase of the intention form and the pre-payment to Umejuru present a good deal of indications that the group is behind him and would like to see him leading them at all costs. With elections already knocking on the door, it remains to be seen how he will finally respond to this call to contest. Be that as it may, one thing is clear: the people of ONELGA do need a leader that can give expression to their causes and bring to the people sustainable development.
