Rivers State political crisis deepens: Supreme court judgment sparks new controversy

There has been a dramatic twist in the Rivers State political scene with the nullification of the October 2024 local to government election by the Supreme Court. The judgment, which was based on irregularities in the election process, has resulted in massive jubilation among the supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

But the triumph was short-lived, as the Rivers State Government already made it clear that it would challenge the ruling. In a statement, the Governor Siminalayi Fubara administration described the judgment as “unfair” and “unjust,” claiming it was founded on “technicalities” instead of the “merits” of the case.

Meanwhile, Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Martin Amaewhule has hailed the Supreme Court verdict as a “victory for democracy” and a “validation” of his leadership. Amaewhule, who was legitimized by the Supreme Court as a genuine member of the State House of Assembly, called on Governor Fubara to “respect” the rule of law and “accept” the judgment.

As the political saga continues, the focus now shifts to the Federal High Court, which is to rule on the legality of the defection of the lawmakers to the APC. The ruling in this matter is certain to have far-reaching consequences on the fate of Rivers State and its citizens.

In a related development, Rivers State APC has asked Governor Fubara to “resign” immediately, arguing that the Supreme Court’s decision is proof of his “illegitimacy.” The ruling, said the party chairman, Chief Emeka Beke, was a “vindication” of the APC’s stance and a “clear indication” that Governor Fubara’s government is “illegal.” The Rivers State crisis, as it unfolds, has generated concern about the stability of the state and possible violence. As events unfold, one thing is certain: the people of Rivers State are looking forward to an end to the crisis and a restoration of normalcy.
